A new law has gone into effect starting this year that will require businesses to file 1099′s for all vendors they use throughout the year that they pay over $600 to throughout the year. This means that you will need to have any vendors that are not corporations fill out a W-9 form which provides you with their name (or the name of their business), their address and their social security number or their EIN number. You can download and print out this form at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf

I totally agree that this is pain but it needs to be done. If you have any problem with getting your vendors to do this, I guess the best thing to do is to tell them about the new rules and without it you cannot pay them. Personally, this is going to going to create a lot more paperwork for everyone with these forms and then having to do all the 1099′s at the end of the year and mail them all out but there’s no avoiding it. So much for the ‘reduction of paperwork act’. Again, you do not need to do these for businesses that are corporations (INC’s) but you do need to have it done for all other vendors (individuals, LLCs, partnerships).

I wanted to tell you about a new business that has started in our Western North Carolina area! It’s called Mother Earth Produce. You can visit their website at http://www.motherearthproduce.com

I encourage you to check it out! They will be delivering fresh produce right to your door. They are working with local farms in our area. There are no contracts, no minimum orders to place, no up front fees. Now you can get fresh, in season produce delivered to your doorstep once a week without having to drive all over the place. They have three different sizes of produce bags you can choose from.

Here’s an intro to Graham and Andrea’s new business venture, Mother Earth Produce:

“We feel like we have always innately understood the importance of food as our medicine as well as the vast number of benefits that come with being aware of locally-grown produce from environmentally conscious growers. However, until we moved to Asheville to witness the abundance of locally-grown produce and farmers, we never understood how realistic and uniting this commitment could be. We also never realized how ignorant we had been on the destructive consequences to ourselves and our environment through industrial farming.

We have always craved to be a part of a community who worked together to support a greater awareness of sustainable values and steps to help each other grow as well as to heal the environment. It was apparent that the community around Western Carolina was aware and supportive of local food, but realistically many of us have hectic schedules that aren’t flexible enough to spend time each week visiting farmer’s markets and CSA drops. Once we explored other produce delivery businesses in the country, we knew that there was a reason we felt so passionate and driven for this cause. We knew there must be a way for everyone in the community to have the option to incorporate a local food lifestyle regardless of their busy lives and schedules.

To say that this is a complete “leap of faith” is an understatement. In our world, this seems like the perfect solution to help the community on so many levels, but it has been an adventure trying to figure out all of the logistics. We were grateful to receive the guidance from a mentor who built a similar business up north. He has passed down the wisdom and knowledge that he has learned through hard work, success, and challenges to help ensure that Mother Earth Produce has a strong foundation. We are now completely surrendering to the local community to join forces and create this direct connection between growers and consumers.

Thank you so much for joining us on this adventure! We sincerely appreciate your support, and we look forward to meeting each of you.

Graham, Andrea, and Totem”

Please welcome them to our community, check out their website and help them support local farmers and bring fresh fruits & veggies to your family. What could be better?

This coming year, 2012, let’s try to share a little more. Let’s open our hearts, our doors, make room around our dinner tables and share our love with one another. We all have something to share; time, money, a hug, a meal, laughter, a smile. We can each commit to share a little something with just one person each day and it will make a world of difference. We might not be able to see the immediate effects, but I assure you, that little bit of sharing of ones self with others will make a difference in their lives. We seem to have lost touch with the power of sharing. It’s what has made us who we are for hundreds of years. It’s what makes us neighbors, friends, family, community. Remember the old saying, “Reach out and touch someone.”? It does matter. What you give out, you receive back. So by sharing with someone else you are actually, in the long run, sharing with yourself. Join me in committing in 2012 to sharing a little something every day with someone you know or even with just someone you meet or pass by.

Everyone needs a Thanksgiving Pie!! This year you don’t have to make it yourself! On Tuesday November 22nd the FEAST cooking classes at Asheville Middle School will be baking and selling pies to support the FEAST program at the middle school.
Pies will be made from scratch by the students using local pumpkins and local apples. Students will learn how to make a delicious pastry crust from pie professionals like Barbara Swell. All proceeds from the sales will go to teach more hands on FEAST cooking classes where students learn how to prepare healthy food from fresh ingredients. These classes empower students to take control of what they eat and teach them that all people can eat well – regardless of their income level.
The Pumpkin and Apple Pies will be $10 each and will be available for pick up from 2pm to 4pm at Asheville Middle School on Tuesday November 22nd. If you would like to buy a pie please pre-order by contacting cathycleary@gmail.com.
FEAST is a program of Slow Food Asheville.
